The contraindications, pad rules, and session habits that make home TENS use safe — read this before your first session.
Quick Answer
Who should not use a TENS machine?
Do not use a TENS machine if you have a pacemaker or implanted electrical device, during pregnancy unless approved by a doctor, or for undiagnosed pain, chest pain, epilepsy, active cancer treatment areas, or reduced skin sensation unless cleared by a qualified healthcare professional.
Who should NOT use a TENS machine
Do not use a TENS device at all — or without explicit clearance from a qualified healthcare professional — if any of these apply:
- Pacemaker or any implanted electrical device — absolute contraindication
- Pregnancy — only with a doctor's approval
- Epilepsy
- Undiagnosed pain — get pain diagnosed before masking it
- Chest pain — seek medical assessment, not electrotherapy
- Active cancer treatment areas
- Reduced or absent skin sensation — you cannot feel when intensity is too high
- Heart disease — consult first
Where pads must never go
- Over the heart or across the chest
- On the neck or front of the throat
- On the head or face
- Over broken, irritated, or infected skin
- Over numb areas
Safe session habits
- Place pads on clean, dry skin; connect leads before switching on
- Always start at the lowest intensity and increase slowly to a comfortable tingling — never to pain
- Use the session timer; follow the duration in the product manual
- Switch the device off before removing pads
- Do not use while sleeping, driving, or operating machinery
- Check the skin under the pads after each session; rest the area if it is red or irritated
Follow the manual — always
These are general safety principles; your device's manual is the specific authority for pad placement diagrams, session limits, and maintenance. Our Portable TENS EMS Machine ships with a user guide, lead wires, and electrode pads. If TENS is part of an injury or condition management plan, use it the way your doctor or physiotherapist directs.
