Why ROM braces appear in some ACL recovery plans

After ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) surgery, some surgeons want the knee protected while it heals, with bending allowed only within a set range that increases over the weeks. A ROM (range of motion) brace makes that possible: hinges on each side have adjustable stops that limit how far the knee can bend and straighten. Not every protocol uses a brace — follow your own surgeon's plan.

Movement control, explained simply

The hinge stops are set in degrees. For example, a clinician might allow the knee to bend up to a certain angle in the early weeks, then increase that angle at follow-up visits. The brace holds those limits during walking and daily activity, so the healing ligament is not pushed past the range your clinician set. The settings should only ever be changed on professional advice.

What to check before buying

• Adjustable hinge range — the brace must allow the settings your clinician has specified
• Strap quality — post-surgery braces are worn for weeks; straps must hold firm without constant re-tightening
• Padding and comfort — the leg may be swollen and sensitive after surgery
